Work is Worship in Canada
By: Elizabeth, University Arts student in North Island College transfer program with guaranteed admission to University of Victoria
Mahatma Gandhi once said “Work is Worship” and I think this Gandhian motto is implemented everyday in the Canadian working system. When I first applied for the post of an Intercultural Ambassador at the North Island college I was stunned by the approach that I received from the college staff. I was warmly greeted by the hiring personnel and with a friendly smile thanked for dropping my resume. This was so much unlike the experience I had while applying for jobs in India. In a week, I had my interview and was appointed as the new Intercultural Ambassador of my college.
On the first day of my work, I was introduced to my seniors and was told to address everybody by their first names. This was totally new for me. We would have meetings in the board room every week and no matter if you are a senior or a fresher everybody’s suggestions would be taken seriously.
A lot of time and effort would be put into planning every event and by the end of each event all my colleagues would appreciate my work and each one of us would receive a letter of appreciation on behalf of the international office. As human beings we feel good when our work gets recognized and strive hard each time to give our best performance. No wonder Canada is prospering today because the key to its success lies in these two simple words “Thank you” and the impact that they bring in the working environment.
